FLAMEX

Roscoflamex fire retardants have been formulated to meet the extreme needs of the entertainment industry and are designed to treat the wide range of diverse materials used in scenery, props, and costume construction. Roscoflamex products meet fire retardant standards as established by NFPA, ASTM, and have been approved by the CA Fire Marshall and New York City Fire Dept.

Roscoflamex MC is a non-toxic, 0% VOC fire retardant that has been engineered to treat the following materials:

Cotton Jute, Twine & Burlap Silks & Other Delicate Fabrics
Polyesters Nylons Rayon
Olefins Open Cell Foam Wood
Hay & Thatching Paper Cardboard

Using Roscoflamex MC
Roscoflamex MC has been premixed and does not require any further dilution. The method of application and the amount of Roscoflamex MC required for sufficient treatment varies with the materials in use.

Coverage
One gallon of Roscoflamex MC will treat approximately 400 square feet (37 square meters). Coverage area may vary depending on thickness and density of material being treated.

Applying Roscoflamex MC

Dipping: This is the most efficient method of impregnation. Immerse completely for ten minutes and hang to dry.

Brushing: Using a wide lay-in brush, brush the Flamex solution into the fibers of the material being treated. Brush in the solution using a crisscrossing pattern to ensure adequate absorption.

Spraying: In a spray application, it is very important that an adequate amount of the Flamex be absorbed. In calculating the amount of solution needed, remember that a substantial portion of the spray will not fall on the substrate. For best results, use a Hudson-type sprayer with a medium nozzle and hang the material to be treated, then spray in a back and forth pattern starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top of the substrate.

Certification and Testing
Roscoflamex PC has been approved for use by the California State Fire Marshall and FDNY Fire Marshall and has been tested according to ASTM E-84 Class A and NFPA 701. To comply with California or New York approvals, please refer to the appropriate document on the resources tab for more information.

Storage
Store Roscoflamex MC in non-metallic containers. When metal sprayers are used, they should be thoroughly cleaned immediately after use, including nozzles and accessories. Avoid use of metal buckets or paint containers when possible.

Using Roscoflamex PA
Roscoflamex PA has been pre-measured and should be added to a single US Gallon (3.79L) of paint. Once combined, the paint/Flamex mixture can be diluted as desired but the dry paint film must be no less than 4 mil in thickness. The effectiveness of a fire retardant barrier is dependent on both the fire retardant additive and the thickness of the coating. Roscoflamex PA is not intended to be used in place of other Roscoflamex products. Where possible, always treat the substrate material using the appropriate Roscoflamex product.

Note: When using Roscoflamex PA in Rosco Supersaturated paint add one 8 oz. jar to one quart of undiluted Supersaturated and then dilute this mixture at least 1:1 with water. Mix thoroughly before using.

Coverage
8 oz. of Roscoflamex PA mixed into one gallon of paint will treat approximately 300 square feet (28 square meters) of material as per paint manufacturer’s guidelines.

Applying Roscoflamex PA

Apply treated paint by brush, roller or sprayer as per the paint manufacturer’s instructions. Regardless of the method of application, it is vital that a complete paint film is formed and that the dry film thickness of the finished coating is not less than 4 mil. Paint films that are incomplete, or are too thin, will not provide a barrier against the spread of fire.

Certification and Testing
Roscoflamex PA has been approved for use by the California Fire Marshall and has been tested according to ASTM E84 Class A.

Storage
Store Flamex products in non-metallic containers. When metal sprayers are used, they should be thoroughly cleaned immediately after use, including nozzles and accessories. Avoid use of metal buckets or paint containers when possible.
